Pentecost/Choir Sunday

Pentecost is the festival when Christians celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. Celebrated  50 days after Easter, its name comes from the Greek “pentekoste,” 50th. It is regarded as the birthday of the Christian church, and the start of the church’s mission to the world.

In the United States, Christians share their perspective about the meaning of Pentecost as well as how the diversity of languages and cultures can enhance their worship and fellowship with each other. It is also referred to as the “forgotten” holy day in the liturgical calendar because it is not connected to the whirl of consumerism that prepares the arrival of Christmas and Easter. Falling late in the spring, it can be overlooked in favor of trips to the lake or golf course. Yet, the celebration of Pentecost is rich with creative possibilities to enhance the worship of our congregation. In Italy, rose petals are dropped from the balcony to symbolize the descent of flames. Other celebrations include: lighting red candles, waving red ribbons or red carnations, rolling a red carpet down the center aisle, or (my personal favorite) having a “tongues of fire” chili cook-off during Fellowship Hour. Symbols that represent flames, wind, doves, language, birthing, and music can be used to heighten awareness.

Because Pentecost Sunday (May 19th) coincides with Choir Sunday this year, we are using this opportunity to boost our Mission through Music. We are preparing four anthems from differing countries and cultures and hope to have Salsa Grass join us. We encourage you to wear RED, bring a symbol of Pentecost to place on the communion table, and join us for a birthday celebration.

Upcoming services are:

Pitching In

Youth who have been scheduled as babysitters should look for a letter from Janelle to indicate their preferences and availability for summer. Now that LOGOS and Pathfinders programs have ended for the year and summer is coming, we ask for all members to look at times when they would be willing to serve in the roles for the weekly service duties. The positions of Usher and Greeter are combined in the summer months. If you haven’t signed up, please consider doing so, or contact the church (235-3536).

Skyline Camp Outreach Opportunity

United Presbyterian Church of Laramie is putting together a clean-up/work weekend at Skyline Camp for May 31-June 2 (Fri-Sun). This is an important outreach opportunity every year, but even more important this year, since Skyline will be reopened for summer camps!! If you are interested in coordinating a group from Shepherd, please call the church at 235-3536.

Blessings to All of You!
