December 7 Jacob: Gen. 25:1-34; 28:10-15 Symbols: kettle, ladder<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 25 Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah. 2 She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. 3 Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim. 4 The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah. 5 Abraham gave all he had to Isaac. 6 But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, while he was still living, and he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 This is the length of Abraham\u2019s life, one hundred seventy-five years. 8 Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people. 9 His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre, 10 the field that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried, with his wife Sarah. 11 After the death of Abraham God blessed his son Isaac. And Isaac settled at Beer-lahai-roi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12 These are the descendants of Ishmael, Abraham\u2019s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah\u2019s slave-girl, bore to Abraham. 13 These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, named in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael; and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa, 15 Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. 16 These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments, twelve princes according to their tribes. 17 (This is the length of the life of Ishmael, one hundred thirty-seven years; he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.) 18 They settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt in the direction of Assyria; he settled down alongside of all his people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

19 These are the descendants of Isaac, Abraham\u2019s son: Abraham was the father of Isaac, 20 and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, sister of Laban the Aramean. 21 Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived. 22 The children struggled together within her; and she said, \u201cIf it is to be this way, why do I live?\u201d So she went to inquire of the Lord. 23 And the Lord said to her,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTwo nations are in your womb,
    and two peoples born of you shall be divided;
the one shall be stronger than the other,
    the elder shall serve the younger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

24 When her time to give birth was at hand, there were twins in her womb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 28 10\u00a0Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran.\u00a011\u00a0He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place.\u00a012\u00a0And he dreamed that there was a ladder\u00a0set up on the earth, the top of it reaching to heaven; and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.\u00a013\u00a0And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0stood beside him\u00a0and said, \u201cI am the\u00a0Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring;\u00a014\u00a0and your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and all the families of the earth shall be blessed[c]\u00a0in you and in your offspring.\u00a015\u00a0Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
