{"id":192,"date":"2020-12-07T17:54:14","date_gmt":"2020-12-07T17:54:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sothwy.org\/readings\/?p=192"},"modified":"2021-03-03T20:47:04","modified_gmt":"2021-03-03T20:47:04","slug":"jacob","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/sothwy.org\/readings\/2020\/12\/07\/jacob\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacob"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>December 7&nbsp;Jacob: Gen. 25:1-34; 28:10-15&nbsp;Symbols:&nbsp;kettle, ladder<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 25 Abraham took another wife, whose name was Keturah.&nbsp;2&nbsp;She bore him Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah.&nbsp;3&nbsp;Jokshan was the father of Sheba and Dedan. The sons of Dedan were Asshurim, Letushim, and Leummim.&nbsp;4&nbsp;The sons of Midian were Ephah, Epher, Hanoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these were the children of Keturah.&nbsp;5&nbsp;Abraham gave all he had to Isaac.&nbsp;6&nbsp;But to the sons of his concubines Abraham gave gifts, while he was still living, and he sent them away from his son Isaac, eastward to the east country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>7&nbsp;This is the length of Abraham\u2019s life, one hundred seventy-five years.&nbsp;8&nbsp;Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people.&nbsp;9&nbsp;His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah, in the field of Ephron son of Zohar the Hittite, east of Mamre,&nbsp;10&nbsp;the field that Abraham purchased from the Hittites. There Abraham was buried, with his wife Sarah.&nbsp;11&nbsp;After the death of Abraham God blessed his son Isaac. And Isaac settled at Beer-lahai-roi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>12&nbsp;These are the descendants of Ishmael, Abraham\u2019s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah\u2019s slave-girl, bore to Abraham.&nbsp;13&nbsp;These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, named in the order of their birth: Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael; and Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam,&nbsp;14&nbsp;Mishma, Dumah, Massa,&nbsp;15&nbsp;Hadad, Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.&nbsp;16&nbsp;These are the sons of Ishmael and these are their names, by their villages and by their encampments, twelve princes according to their tribes.&nbsp;17&nbsp;(This is the length of the life of Ishmael, one hundred thirty-seven years; he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.)&nbsp;18&nbsp;They settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt in the direction of Assyria; he settled down alongside of all his people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>19&nbsp;These are the descendants of Isaac, Abraham\u2019s son: Abraham was the father of Isaac,&nbsp;20&nbsp;and Isaac was forty years old when he married Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel the Aramean of Paddan-aram, sister of Laban the Aramean.&nbsp;21&nbsp;Isaac prayed to the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;for his wife, because she was barren; and the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;granted his prayer, and his wife Rebekah conceived.&nbsp;22&nbsp;The children struggled together within her; and she said, \u201cIf it is to be this way, why do I live?\u201d So she went to inquire of the&nbsp;Lord.&nbsp;23&nbsp;And the&nbsp;Lord&nbsp;said to her,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTwo nations are in your womb,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and two peoples born of you shall be divided;<br>the one shall be stronger than the other,<br>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the elder shall serve the younger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>24&nbsp;When her time to give birth was at hand, there were twins in her womb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 28 10\u00a0Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran.\u00a011\u00a0He came to a certain place and stayed there for the night, because the sun had set.
